COLLAGEN

Collagen is an important component in the human body. About one quarter of all of the protein in your body is collagen. It constitutes up to 70% of our skin. It is mainly vital for its ability to hold connective tissues of the skin together. Bones and teeth are made of by adding mineral crystals to collagen. Collagen provides structure to our bodies, protecting and supporting the softer tissues and connecting them with the skeleton. But, in spite of its critical function in the body, collagen is a relatively simple protein. Humans towards their late stages of life, starts to lose elasticity of their skin due to the reduction of collagen to these skin areas. This results in wrinkles and eye bags. It is found that around the age of 25 our body slowly reduces production of collagen and by the age of 45 it is estimated around 30 percent of our body’s collagen as been reduced. This is due to constantly facing overwhelming stress, inadequate sleep, an unhealthy diet.

Collagen is actually composed of three chains, wound together in a tight triple helix. The illustration included here shows only a small segment of the entire molecule, where each of the chain is over 1400 amino acids long and only about 20 are shown here. A repeated sequence of three amino acids forms this sturdy structure. Every third amino acid is glycine, a small amino acid that fits perfectly inside the helix. Many of the remaining positions in the chain are filled by two unexpected amino acids: proline and a modified version of proline, hydroxyproline. We wouldn't expect proline to be this common, because it forms a kink in the polypeptide chain that is difficult to accommodate in typical globular proteins.

Collagen is said to contain at least 20 amino acids some namely glucosamine and chondroitin.

Glucosamine is an amino sugar and prominent precursor in the biochemical synthesis of glycosylated proteins and lipids.

Chondroitin is a sulfated glycosaminoglycan (GAG) which compose a chain of sugars. The chains can have over 100 sugars which can be sulfated in variable positions and quantities.

Mostly hydolyzed collagen is extracted from bone and skin of porcine, bovine and fish origin. but this hydrolyzed MARINE collagen is extracted from a range of fish close to cod family. they took the raw material, the frozen fish skin all the way from North Alantic to Spain. Then they treated the material to obtain the desired high quality of collagen. It is very important to treat it as soon as possible because need to get the best quality out of it so as to set up an exclusively dedicated facility to process the freshest available cod skin.
